Overview
Here at The State Dirt Company we sell dirt. Not just regular dirt, but carefully selected batches from all over the United States. Our goal is to one day offer all 50 states for sale to the public. We package our dirt in clear plastic boxes with the state silhouette on the side. We do not offer lots of lots of dirt, most of our inventory is limited. We sell what we have in stock.
The Story
I was traveling across the Ohio Turnpike in Summer of 2005 when I was thinking about how people sell shot glasses, piggy banks, and other things from different states. While labeled with the state name or bird, these do not necessarily get made in the state. I thought that if I sold a piece of every state, then you would have the ultimate souvenir.
I could not just launch this company
on a whim. I needed dirt. We contacted several people through a message board and gathered contacts throughout the states. We nearly have a contact for all. This was going to be the original method for obtaining soil, but we never actually went ahead and had the dirt shipped. While on a weekend road trip in the early Spring of 2006, I started gathering my first boxes of dirt while in New England.
I got boxes full of Maine, Massachutess, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Not planning 100% on getting dirt I forgot a shovel. I scooped dirt into boxes with my hands and kicked it up with my feet. I skipped Vermont and New Hampshire because it was too cold and the ground was too hard. After this trip I had my first 5 varieties of dirt (Including Pennsylvania).
Ever since I have refused to leave a state without dirt unless it is a bordering state. In August of 2006, with 42% representation of the United States in stock, I finally launched this website.
