Kentucky Batch 2006-1

July 01, 2006

Kentucky's first batch of dirt was one of my most interesting. We were in Mommoth Cave National Park braving the hot July temperature. After quickly taking pictures and moving on, I pulled off to the side of the road to get my dirt. We were still miles into the park, but I had no idea it was illegal to remove resources from a National Park, be it as small of a move as I was making.

I quickly got out and started to scoop the dry dirt into the box with the Park Police pulled up behind me. With the box half full, the officer walked up to me and asked me what I was doing. Nervously, I said that it was a hobby of me to take a box full of dirt from the places I've been.

He polietly told me that National Park soil is off limits for "taking". I dumped the box back out and drove off. Thank God I didn't get accused of worse. How many people do you see shoveling dirt into a box from the side of the road?

I drove to the highway off ramp right before the interstate (out of the park) and got my dirt.
