Letter: Would your name be Mud?

Editor, Daily News:

If you searched and didn't succeed in finding something unusual to buy your honey for Christmas, I have a solution, even though you may be a little late.

Why not give him, or her, a lovely box of dirt?

Readers who were children during the 1930s Depression era readily recall the annual threats by parents who promised that, because we were "bad kids," Santa was going to put a lump of coal in the stockings we hung by the fire.

Well, the dirt I'm referring to is not intended to serve the same punishing purpose as a lump of coal. The dirt I have in mind is souvenir dirt — the unique product of the State Dirt Co. of Leechburg, Pa.

Clinton Godlesky, the president of the firm, collects the dirt by the shovelful during his travels and sells it in plastic containers, with a state silhouette on one side, for $9.99.

He hasn't made it around the country yet, so his current inventory includes dirt from just 25 states.

"I guarantee the state of origin," Godlesky said. "I would not take Alabama dirt and sell it as West Virginia dirt." More information is available on the State Dirt Co. Web site.

Obviously, recipients of gift dirt must be carefully selected. My current wife would cheerfully accept a gift of Pennsylvania dirt from me as a Christmas present. However, my first wife would not only reject the gift, she would have used the dirt to top off my grave site after she shot me with her pistol.

Gene Gomolka, Naples and West Chester, Pa.

7 New States To Be Added

By: Clinton N. Godlesky, statedirt.com

Early in September, we will start a roadrip of 4,000+ miles. We will travel through 7 new states and possibly collect dirt from 8 new states, bringing our total to 33 states total. The new states planned are:

  • Wisconsin
  • Minnesota
  • North Dakota
  • Montana
  • South Dakota
  • Wyoming
  • Colorado

We've been through Ohio numerous times, but we just have not taken the time to pick up some dirt. This time we actually might pick some up!

We are very excited to getting closer to our 50 state goal.

7 New States Added
By: Clinton N. Godlesky, statedirt.com

Early in September, we completed a roadrip of 4,000+ miles. We traveled through 7 new states. We saw amazing things like Mount Rushmore, Devils Tower, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Badlands. The new states are:

  • Wisconsin
  • Minnesota
  • North Dakota
  • Montana
  • South Dakota
  • Wyoming
  • Colorado

Wyoming dirt is the most intersting, as it has a red coloring. Montana dirt is very gray, as the area was quite dry. Colorado is sandy, as North Eastern Colorado is still high plains area, thus sandy.

Ohio Added
By: Clinton N. Godlesky, statedirt.com

Finally, after 6 seperate trips through Ohio where I came back with no dirt, I actually stopped to get some. So we now have Ohio dirt in stock!
